🌄 Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Srinagar to Kokernag via Chatpal

Start early from Srinagar and head south into the lesser-explored heart of Kashmir. The drive itself is a treat — you’ll pass through Pampore, famous for its saffron fields and saffron processing factories, a sight unique to Kashmir. En route, don’t miss the magnificent Martand Sun Temple, one of the finest examples of ancient Kashmiri temple architecture dating back to the 8th century.

Continue through the serene village of Chatpal, a quiet, green pocket of South Kashmir that sets the mood for the days ahead. By evening, arrive at Kokernag — your base for the night.

🏨 Night Stay: Kokernag

Day 2 — Kokernag to Verinag to Daksum

After breakfast, head to Verinag Spring — the legendary source of the river Jhelum. The spring is a striking natural wonder, with remarkably clear blue water welling up from the earth. It is framed by Mughal-era octagonal architecture, built under Emperor Jahangir, and surrounded by a well-maintained garden where you can sit, relax, and soak in the tranquillity.

After lunch at a local eatery nearby, make your way to Daksum — a beautiful offbeat destination nestled deep within a dense forest of pine and fir trees. The sound of a rushing river, the fragrance of wild forest air, and the total absence of city noise make Daksum feel like a world apart. You can explore the Daksum Wildlife Sanctuary and its botanical garden, home to a rich variety of flora. The area is ideal for nature walks and birdwatching.

🏨 Night Stay: Daksum

Day 3 — Day Trip to Sinthan Top

After breakfast, begin the scenic drive toward Sinthan Top — one of the most breathtaking high-altitude passes in South Kashmir, standing at approximately 12,400 feet (3,780 metres) above sea level. The road winds through dense forests, crossing rivers and climbing through dramatic curves that reward you with sweeping mountain views at every turn.

Along the way, look out for Gujjar and Bakarwal nomadic settlements — small roadside setups where you can try Nun Chai (traditional pink Kashmiri salt tea) and Makki Roti (maize flatbread). It’s a simple but deeply authentic experience. At the summit, take your time — breathe in the high-altitude air, capture photographs, and enjoy the vast silence of the mountains.

Return to Daksum by evening.

🏨 Night Stay: Daksum

Day 4 — Daksum to Warwan Valley via Margan Top

Today is one of the most thrilling days of the trip. After breakfast, set off toward Warwan Valley via the legendary Margan Top.

The road to Margan Top is famously known as the “Valley of Death” — not for the faint-hearted, it is a narrow, serpentine mountain road with hairpin bends that twist dramatically through the mountains. The journey is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. Refreshment stalls are available along the route, so you won’t go hungry.

At Margan Top, take a 30-minute break and catch your breath — both figuratively and literally. Maggi and tea stalls at the top make for a welcome pause. The panoramic view of the Margan Valley from here is absolutely jaw-dropping. Note that Margan Top serves as a base for several alpine lake treks, which you will explore on Day 6 on your return journey.

Descend into the remote and magical Warwan Valley and check in for the night.

🏨 Night Stay: Warwan Valley

⚠️ Important: Carry sufficient cash, a fully charged power bank, and download offline maps before entering Warwan Valley. There are no ATMs, no petrol pumps, and very limited mobile network in this area.

Day 5 — Leisure Day in Warwan Valley

Welcome to one of Kashmir’s best-kept secrets. Warwan Valley is a remote, largely untouched tribal valley with a character unlike anywhere else in the region. Today is entirely at leisure — there is no fixed agenda, and that’s exactly the point.

Wander through local villages, interact with the warm-hearted locals, and experience the tribal culture of Kashmir at its most genuine. Visit the remote Inshan Village for a glimpse into daily life in one of the most isolated corners of the valley. If you’re a nature lover, the riverside camping sites along the Warwan River are perfect for quiet afternoons. This is the kind of place that reminds you why travel exists.

🏨 Night Stay: Warwan Valley

Day 6 — Choharnag Lake Trek & Return to Kokernag

Rise early — a 6:00 AM departure is essential today. The goal is to reach Margan Top by around 9:00 AM, leaving enough daylight for the trek ahead.

From Margan Top, set off on the Choharnag Lakes Trek — a short but spectacular 2-hour trek that takes you through alpine meadows and high-altitude terrain to four stunning glacial lakes. The Choharnag Lakes are a favourite among trekkers for good reason — the scenery is pristine, the silence is profound, and the sense of reward at each lake is immense.

After returning to Margan Top, descend toward Kokernag for your final night stay.

🏨 Night Stay: Kokernag

Day 7 — Kokernag to Srinagar

The last day arrives. Take your time with breakfast and rest — you’ve earned it. Depart in the afternoon and make your way back to Srinagar.

On the way, stop at Avantipora to visit the ancient Avantipora Ruins (also known as the Avantiswami Temple), a 9th-century Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It’s a remarkable piece of Kashmir’s ancient heritage that many tourists overlook.

By evening, you’ll be back in Srinagar — tired, but carrying memories that will last a lifetime.

💡 Essential Travel Tips

  • 🔋 Power banks are a must — especially in Warwan Valley where power supply is unreliable

  • Fill up fuel before heading toward Margan Top and Warwan Valley
  • 📵 Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before entering remote areas
  • 🧥 Pack warm layers — even in summer, passes like Sinthan Top and Margan Top can be cold
